Summer is a time for swimming at the beach, playing fetch at the park, and hanging your head out of the car window. Tons of fun for the dog in your life, yet each one poses a unique threat if he can’t cool down when the temperature rises.

Dogs have a small number of sweat glands in their paw pads, but they exchange heat primarily through panting. Unfortunately, this isn’t always enough to combat increasingly high temperatures, and it’s your job to monitor them for signs of overheating.

Keep an eye out for heavy panting, excessive drooling, or rapid and heavy breathing. In addition, dry and pale gums can be a significant indicator. If you suspect your dog may be suffering from extreme heat, move him immediately into an air-conditioned room and contact a vet right away.
